APRIL GARDENING CHECK LIST
Continue to plant warm weather vegetables. Squash, melons, okra, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers….
Start planting warm weather flowering annuals. Vinca, moss rose,celosia,angelonia,pentas..
Begin to transition winter lawns by lowering mowing heights weekly thru April
Adjust watering schedules to reflect warmer temperatures. Pick up a Free copy of “landscape watering by the numbers”.
Start checking sprinkler heads, drippers, etc for leaks,skips,misses-be sure all systems are working properly-If you need help with this call us-602 659 5994!
It is definitely safe now to plant frost tender trees, shrubs, and vines, the same is true for pruning. What plants haven’t started leafing out by now, probably are not going to.
Be on the lookout for Mites. As warm dry temps occur mites become more active, especially on evergreens and junipers
Watch for powdery mildew on grapes and roses in particular. Fertilome triple action is a great control!
Speaking of grapes: be on the lookout also for skeletonizers. Black and yellow caterpillars follow the appearance of a deep purple mothlike adult. Damage is rapid and the name is appropriate. Spinosad or thuricide are the best remedies.
Plant shade trees and vines to cut down on utility bills, also replace any dead or severely damaged ficus while weather is best. Live Oaks, elms,fan-tex ash, mesquite, and palo verde are our recommendations.
If you did not overseed your lawn for the winter, it should be starting to green up. If so start watering and give it a fertilization of fertilome lawn food or turf royale.
Control weeds before they become a fire hazard or go to seed and continue to be a problem for years to come! Be sure and use pre emergent herbicides like “dimension”

There is always a weekly tip and a coupon that goes with the tip of the week which you can print out, bring in and save %20 OFF on the associated product! This week’s tip is “blossom end rot” on tomatoes and peppers. This usually doesn’t show up until warmer weather and mature fruit is on the vine, but you can help prevent it by using good soil, like Gro well’s square foot garden soil, lots of gypsum, and watering correctly. Fertilome also makes a blossom end rot preventer spray which has been very effective. Be sure to continue to fertilize your warm season vegetables regularly as well!! Stay tuned in and Great Growing!!
We hope that we have helped get your April and Spring gardening season off to a great start! See you out in the garden!
