Since it’s hot out the topic of fall gardening was a natural right? A lot of folks are anxious to get their fall veggies going-no one could be more anxious than one who makes a living selling seeds, plants, fertilizer, mulch and all the goodies for growing a garden, especially with the summer doldrums abounding. Here is a link to our low desert planting dates for flowers and vegetables Harper’s Planting Dates You’ll notice tomatoes are not listed for fall gardening. Until a few years ago very few tried to “sneak” a fall crop of tomatoes in. Some years it worked and if we had a hard freeze, well you know how that worked out. But even with some hard freezes people are still willing to try and grow fall tomatoes. Some go to big measures to build cold frames and green houses to heat them and some will build elaborate shade structures and watering systems to get them started as early as now. We will sell fall tomato transplants when we feel your best chance for getting them established is upon us (not when it is 110 plus). If your soil is not prepared, take the next week or so and get it ready with lots of organic material, gypsum, and fertilizer. We’re not criticizing anyone for starting early but you have to be very committed and most folks aren’t or don’t realize what it takes. It is our opinion that a couple of weeks will not matter, you’ll use less water, and your chances of success will be just as good-and your chances of facing a freeze in late November are just as good! The Harper Boys want you to be a success, we even guarantee it, so we won’t be selling tomato starts until we feel it is in most gardeners best interest and in the “sweet spot” for success. Watch the weather and keep calling us-we’ll even put you on a list and call you when we have them. In the mean time there are lots of things that you can get started from seed now-Don’t Just Stand There-Plant something!!
