SPRING HAS SPRUNG-ARE YOUR PRUNERS SHARP?
Can there ever have been a spring that we’ve waited for in such anticipation? Well it is here! That means many of us will be spending some time with pruning shears in hand cutting back or in some cases removing dead and frozen limbs off of plants and trees. The best method is to look for new growth to start emerging from stems and branches, it has-see the picture of a bougainvillea that has begun to sprout, and prune back to that point. If you’re not sure you can scratch the bark and see if there is any green color to the branch or limb and cut back to that point. If you are completely overwhelmed give us a call. Harper’s makes house calls and we do complete landscaping services from pruning to design and planting.
March Garden Check List
Prune back and evaluate frost damaged plants
Weed control-apply pre emergent herbicides like Hi Yield Dimension and Post Emergents like Fertilome weed out w/ Q or Hi Yield Killzall. See us for proper weed identification and product selection. Remember weeds are much easier to control if done while they are young!
Watch for insects-primarily aphids on newly planted vegetable plants and the new growth of rose bushes. Aphid control can be done with fertilome triple action, spinosad, or most non toxic type controls
Continue to plant warm weather vegetable plants. Tomatoes,Peppers,Squash,Melons,Cucumbers,Eggplant,Okra,-most any vegetable that you eat the fruit of is a warm season vegetable. Those that we eat the root or stem of are usually winter crops here.
Begin planting frost sensitive trees and shrubs, or replacing those that might have died or been severely compromised by the freeze. There are many plant choices that are not as sensitive to the cold-ask us! This is also a great time to evaluate your entire landscape scheme. It will look a lot different when everything is pruned back.
Powdery mildew will begin to show up on roses, grapes, squash etc. Fungi are easier to prevent than control. Try not to over water, water in the mornings vs. nights and you can apply fungicides as a preventative measure. Soil sulfur applied on the ground around your plants can also control spores before they get disbursed into the air and on the leaves of your plants.
Continue to plant deciduous fruit trees, grapes, berries, and citrus. We are expecting a shipment of dwarf citrus mid month and deciduous fruit trees are and have arrived.
Plant container rose bushes.
The best time to plant a shade tree was 25 years ago, the next best time is now! There are some great replacements for ficus if you’re interested-Oaks,Ash,Elm,Palo Verde, Mesquite,Acacia…..
Spring Color: Geraniums,petunias,marigolds,zinnias…..What a difference some color will make if your yard has had lots of frost damage!
Fertilize,Fertilize,Fertilize. Winter lawns, roses, trees, shrubs…you name it-it probably needs it!
